Does home insurance cover a locksmith in Spain?

Will your Spanish home insurance pay for the locksmith after a break-in or lost keys? When it is covered, when it is not, and how to claim in Fuengirola.

Does home insurance cover a locksmith in Spain?

In most cases, yes: Spanish home insurance usually covers the locksmith when the lock change comes from a break-in, an attempted break-in or lost keys. What varies a lot between policies are the limits, the excess and whether you can choose your own locksmith. Here is the clear guide — what is covered, what is not, and how to claim in Fuengirola.

Does home insurance cover the locksmith?

It depends on why you need the locksmith and which policy you have. Locksmith cover usually sits under the burglary or the home-assistance section. The general rule is simple: if the problem comes from a break-in or a key emergency, it is usually covered; if it comes from wear or a voluntary upgrade, often it is not.

When insurance usually DOES cover it

  • Burglary or attempted burglary — lock change and repair of the forced door. The most common case and almost always covered.
  • Lost or stolen keys — many policies cover the cylinder change so whoever has your keys cannot get in.
  • Broken key or cylinder — if the key snaps inside or the mechanism fails, it usually falls under home assistance.
  • Locked out — most policies with home assistance cover a door opening, normally with a set number of call-outs per year.

When it usually does NOT cover it

  • Wear or age — changing an old lock “because it is time” is not a claim.
  • Voluntary security upgrades — fitting an anti-bump cylinder or a shield because you want more security is usually at your own cost.
  • Above the limit or excess — many policies pay up to a certain amount; the rest is yours.

How to claim, step by step

  • 1. If there was a break-in, file the police report (the denuncia). Without it the insurer will not pay the burglary claim.
  • 2. Tell your insurer and ask if they send a locksmith or if you can use your own and submit the invoice.
  • 3. Take photos of the damaged door and lock before repairing them.
  • 4. Keep the detailed invoice from the locksmith, with the work itemised.
  • 5. Submit the report + photos + invoice to your insurer for reimbursement.

My advice as a locksmith

Even if your policy has its own locksmith, in an emergency you can call a trusted locksmith and claim afterwards: what matters is that the work is done well and with a proper invoice. I always give a fixed price before starting and an invoice ready for the insurance, so your claim is easy. If you are unsure about the cover, a quick call to your insurer before starting saves surprises.
