If you rent out a flat or villa in Fuengirola or Mijas, the lock on your front door is doing more work than you think. Every changeover is a new set of keys in circulation, and every lost key is a potential problem. Here is how I help holiday-let owners on the Costa del Sol keep their property secure without making life hard for guests or cleaners.
The problem with physical keys in a holiday let
Handing over a metal key works until it doesn't. Keys get copied, lost on the beach, or simply not returned. With back-to-back bookings you often can't check every key comes back, and you can't know whether a copy was made during a two-week stay.
- You can't track who still holds a working key.
- A single lost key can mean re-keying the whole lock.
- Key handovers tie you (or a keyholder) to arrival times.
Electronic locks: the smart upgrade for rentals
An electronic (smart) lock is the single best change most owners make. I fit them over your existing lock, with no building work, so the door looks the same from outside.
- Unique codes per guest — set a code for each booking and it expires at checkout.
- No key handovers — guests let themselves in, so no waiting around for late flights.
- Separate cleaner code — give your cleaning team their own access without a shared key.
- Access log — see who entered and when.
They run on batteries and warn you well before they go flat, and your normal key still works as a backup.
Don't forget the basics
Smart entry is only as strong as the lock behind it. For rentals I usually recommend a good anti-bumping, anti-snap cylinder and, on ground-floor or exposed properties, a security shield to protect the lock from forced attacks. A cheap cylinder is the weak point burglars look for.
A quick checklist for owners
- Fit a keyless smart lock for guest and cleaner access.
- Upgrade to a high-security anti-bumping cylinder.
- Add a security shield on vulnerable doors.
- Re-key immediately if a physical key is ever lost.
